When What Happened Still Affects You

Trauma is a word we either relate to or we shy away from seeing as it too strong of a word for what we have gone through.

The mistake is defining trauma as a one time catastrophic event. It can be that - like a serious injury, accident or death but it also encompasses so much more.

Trauma isn't actually the event that happened by the effect it had on you. It can be what you see as a small thing, or it could be a series of small things that add up over time. No matter what happened, over what period of time, trauma is the lasting effect it has on your brain and nervous system.
On a day or time period when you didn't have adequate resources an event happened that left a lasting impact on you. That is trauma.

Trauma has a way of staying with us. Even when the danger has passed, our bodies and minds can continue to react as though we still need to protect ourselves. We may become anxious, shut down, stay on high alert, struggle to trust, or find ourselves reacting strongly to things we don’t fully understand.

The Psalms speak surprisingly well into those places .They give language to fear, betrayal, grief, anger and the longing to feel safe again.
They also invite us to encounter God—not by pretending the pain isn’t real, but by discovering that we are not alone in it.

Below you’ll find Psalms and reflections that explore trauma, safety, trust and healing.

If you haven't walked through 10 Days Calming Your Anxious Mind, I would suggest you start there. It covers components of trauma healing in bite sized devotions. Hope to see you there.
